Alright, guys, let’s talk about this watch project I’ve been messing around with. So, I’ve been eyeing the Patek Philippe Calatrava, specifically the 6119G-001 model. It’s a real looker, you know? White gold, classic style, the whole nine yards. I decided, why not try to remake one myself? I mean it’s really not easy, but I just wanted to try.
First off, I spent a good chunk of time just staring at pictures of this watch online. I needed to get a feel for every little detail. The case, the dial, the hands – everything. Then, I started sketching. I’m no artist, but I managed to get a decent blueprint down on paper. And I decided to use my own money to buy one in its physical store, cause I need a real thing to help me finish my project.
Next up, I went online to find some raw materials. I’m telling you, finding the right materials was a pain. It took some time to wait, but I’m gonna start. I tried my best to keep things as close to the original as possible. White gold wasn’t in the budget, so I went with a good-quality silver instead.
Then came the real fun part – putting it all together. I started with the case. Shaping the metal, polishing it, trying to get that smooth, elegant look of the original. It was tough, I won’t lie. I messed up a few times, but hey, that’s how you learn, right?
- Crafting the dial: This was tricky. I had to get the markers just right, and the hands had to be perfect. I used some thin metal sheets and a lot of patience.
- The movement: Okay, I didn’t make my own movement. I’m not a watchmaker. I found a decent automatic movement online and used that. It fit pretty well, I must say.
- Putting it all together: Once I had all the parts, I carefully assembled the watch. It felt like performing surgery, but way more fun. The moment I saw it ticking, I was like, “Yes! It’s working!”
Now, my remake isn’t perfect. There are some differences, obviously. I heard somewhere that the waitlist for a real Calatrava can be around a year, maybe even longer for some of their other models. But mine was completed in just about two months. Way faster, but again, not the real deal.
I also read that Patek Philippe moved their headquarters in 1996 to some place called Plan-les-Ouates. Sounds fancy, huh? Anyway, I wear my homemade Calatrava all the time now. It’s a conversation starter, for sure. People ask me about it, and I get to tell the whole story of how I made it.
What I’ve learned
This whole project taught me a lot. Not just about watches, but about patience, attention to detail, and the satisfaction of making something with your own hands. I mean it. If you’re thinking about a project like this, go for it! It’s a wild ride, but totally worth it. And remember, it doesn’t have to be perfect. It just has to be yours.
So, that’s my story about remaking the Patek Philippe Calatrava 6119G-001. Hope you guys enjoyed it. If you ever get the chance to see a real one, do it. They’re pretty amazing. And if you have the money to buy it, it’s also a good choice. But hey, making your own? That’s a whole other level of awesome.
