Okay, so I’ve been getting into this whole watch thing lately, and I had this wild idea to try and put together a Rolex GMT-Master II that looks like the real deal, you know, on a budget. I’ve always dug the look of those fancy Rolex watches, especially that GMT-Master II with the “Root Beer” bezel. It’s just got this classic, kind of old-school cool vibe that I really like.

I started by digging around online, reading reviews on Amazon and checking out what some other folks had done. I read somewhere that the original Rolex GMT Master II in that root beer color, the one with the reference number 16713, was made in both stainless steel and yellow gold. And they stopped making them in 2006.

  • First, I spent hours looking at pictures online, trying to memorize every little detail of the real Root Beer Rolex. The bezel, the hands, the cyclops lens over the date – I wanted to get it all right.
  • Then, I started hunting for parts. This was a whole new world to me. I found some sellers online that had cases, dials, and bezels that looked pretty close to the real thing.
  • I ended up ordering a case that had that same general shape and size as the GMT-Master II. It wasn’t perfect, but it was close enough for my first try.
  • The dial was a bit trickier. I wanted one with that same font and those same hour markers. I finally found one that looked pretty good, although the lume wasn’t as bright as the real Rolex.
  • Next up was the bezel. This was the most important part, since it’s what gives the Root Beer its name. I found a ceramic bezel insert that had that same brown and black color scheme. It snapped right into the case, which was a relief.
  • Putting it all together was a bit nerve-wracking. I used some basic watch tools I got online. I had to be super careful not to scratch anything or mess up the movement. It took a few tries, but I finally got the hands aligned and the dial centered.

So there you have it, my attempt at a High imitation Rolex GMT-Master II Root Beer Bezel, “Original order” style. It’s not a real Rolex, obviously, but it’s got that same Root Beer look that I was going for. It’s definitely a conversation starter, and it’s been a fun project to learn more about watches and how they’re put together. Plus, it’s way cheaper than a real Rolex!
