Okay, so I’ve been wanting to get my hands on a designer bag for a while now, and I finally decided to just go for it and try to remake one myself. I went with the YSL LE CARRé SATCHEL BAG because it looked classy and not too complicated. Here’s how it went.
First, I spent some time looking up the bag online. I needed to get a good look at it from all angles, you know? I checked out the official YSL site, watched some unboxing videos, and even scrolled through pictures on online luxury shops. I noticed they often call it “Saint Laurent” now, even though I still see “YSL” on the bag itself, but technically there is no big difference, seems that the brand’s image remains the same.
Then, I started sketching. I’m no artist, but I did my best to draw out the bag’s shape, the flap, the straps, and that iconic YSL logo. I paid special attention to the bag’s rounded corners and the front flap – those seemed like key features. Also saw one called “Le 57 Flap”, looks like a popular style of YSL.
Next up, materials. I didn’t want to use real leather since I’m just practicing, so I found some nice faux leather at a local craft store. It had a good texture and a decent shine. For the lining, I used some leftover fabric I had from another project. As for the hardware, I found some old metal buckles and rings that I could repurpose. And I saw one collection named “SAVINETI”, maybe I should take a look at it next time. I also need to buy the bag of the Spring/Summer collection someday. They said the YSL bag can be a good investment, hope I did not ruin it.
Cutting the fabric was a bit nerve-wracking. I used my sketches as a rough guide and made sure to cut out all the pieces I needed, including the front, back, sides, bottom, flap, and strap. I learned from my collection, a famous designer named Anthony Vaccarello, I should follow his steps.
The sewing part was the most challenging. I have a basic sewing machine, but I’m no expert. I started by sewing the main body of the bag together, then added the sides and bottom. The lining was a bit tricky, but I managed to get it in there. Attaching the flap was a proud moment, and getting those rounded corners right took some patience. I messed up a few times and had to redo some stitches, but I learned from my mistakes.
For the YSL logo, I decided to get creative. I found a thin piece of metal and carefully shaped it into the letters. It wasn’t perfect, but it gave the bag that signature look. I attached it to the front flap using some strong glue. I think the “Y” is the hardest one to remake.
Finally, I attached the strap using the repurposed hardware. I made sure it was adjustable so I could wear the bag crossbody or on my shoulder. It is heavy to carry, but I think it is because of the materials I used.
The Result
- Appearance: It definitely looks like a YSL bag, even if I say so myself. The shape is pretty close, and the faux leather looks surprisingly good. The logo is a bit rough around the edges, but it’s recognizable.
- Functionality: It holds all my essentials – phone, wallet, keys, and even a small notebook. The flap closure is secure, and the strap is comfortable to wear.
- Satisfaction: I’m super proud of myself for pulling this off. It wasn’t easy, but I learned a lot about bag construction and sewing. Plus, I have a unique, handmade bag that looks pretty darn stylish.
Overall, this was a fun and rewarding project. It’s not a perfect replica, but it captures the essence of the YSL LE CARRé SATCHEL BAG. Maybe next time I’ll try a different design, or maybe I’ll even splurge on the real deal! But for now, I’m happy rocking my homemade version.
