Okay, so I’ve been wanting a Prada Galleria Saffiano bag for a while now, the small one, not the big one. It’s just so classic, you know? Anyway, I finally decided to go for it, but instead of buying a new one, I thought, “Why not try to make one myself?” I mean, how hard could it be, right? (Famous last words, haha!)

First, I gathered all the materials. This was a bit of a challenge. Finding good Saffiano leather was tough! I went to a bunch of different fabric stores and leather suppliers. Finally, I found some that felt right. It had that distinctive cross-hatch texture. I also picked up some sturdy lining material, a zipper, and some metal hardware – you know, for the logo and the strap attachments. Oh, and thread, of course! Lots and lots of thread.

  • Saffiano Leather: This took forever to find. It needed that special textured look.
  • Lining: I chose a nice, thick fabric that I thought would hold up well.
  • Hardware: I got a zipper, some metal pieces for the logo and strap, and metal feet.
  • Thread: I bought a bunch of different colors to match the leather and lining.

Then came the actual construction. I started by cutting out the leather pieces. I used a pattern I found from another bag I have, and modified it to fit the Prada Galleria design. Cutting the leather was nerve-wracking! One wrong move and… well, you get the picture. I measured everything like ten times before making each cut.

Next, I sewed the main body pieces together. I used my trusty old sewing machine, which I’ve had since college. It’s not fancy, but it gets the job done. Sewing the leather was definitely more difficult than regular fabric. It’s so thick! I broke a few needles, I won’t lie.

After that, I attached the lining. This was a bit tricky, getting it all neat and tidy inside. I hand-stitched some parts to make sure it was really secure. Then I added the zipper, which was also a bit of a pain. Zippers are never easy, are they? I used my sewing machine again for some parts and hand-stitched others.

The final steps were adding the handles and the shoulder strap. The handles were particularly challenging, I wanted them to look perfect. I spent hours making sure they were identical. I made the strap detachable, just like the real Prada bag. I also added little metal feet to the bottom, so the leather wouldn’t get scuffed. That was the last touch.

The Result

Honestly, it took way longer than I expected, and it was definitely a challenge. But, after many long nights, and many frustrations later, it’s finished! It’s not perfect, of course. There are a few wonky stitches here and there, but overall, I’m pretty darn proud of myself! It really does look like a mini Prada Galleria. And the best part? I made it with my own two hands! I learned a lot about leatherworking and sewing, and now I’ve got a beautiful, one-of-a-kind bag. I carried it out for the first time yesterday, and got tons of compliments! People kept asking me where I got it, and they were so surprised when I told them I made it myself. So, yeah, it was a lot of work, but totally worth it. I might even try making another one sometime, maybe in a different color. We’ll see!

This whole experience just goes to show that you can do anything you set your mind to, even if it seems a little crazy at first. So, if you’ve been thinking about trying something new, just go for it! You might surprise yourself. Just be prepared to put in the work, haha!
