I decided to go for the Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G-001. It’s a real beauty – simple, elegant, and just screams class. I started by looking up everything I could find about this watch. No way I was doing that.
First things first, I needed to get a good look at the watch. I found a bunch of high-quality pictures online. I zoomed in, studied every little detail, and tried to understand how it all fit together. The case is made of white gold and it’s 40mm wide. It’s got this pilot-style feel to it, which I really dig. And the movement inside? That’s the Patek Philippe caliber 26-330 S C. From what I gathered, it’s made up of 212 parts and beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour. Sounds complicated, huh?

- Finding Parts: This was tough. I couldn’t just walk into a store and buy Patek Philippe parts. I had to scavenge online, find similar-looking parts, and hope they would work.
- Assembling: Oh boy, this was a nightmare. I started with the case, trying to fit the dial and hands. Then came the movement. It was like trying to solve a puzzle made of tiny, expensive pieces. I don’t even have real tools like some watchmaker I know!
After a lot of trial and error (and some frustration, I won’t lie), I finally put it all together. It wasn’t perfect, not even close, but it looked somewhat like a Calatrava. I even tried to add some details to make it look more authentic, like the hobnail pattern on the caseband. Did I mention the original has a price tag of over $40,000? Yeah, mine definitely didn’t cost that much, not even with all the hours I put in. Well, actually it’s almost the same price at $41.
The Result
So, did I end up with a perfect replica of a Patek Philippe Calatrava 5226G-001? No way. But did I learn a lot and have a ton of fun? Absolutely! It’s not something I’d wear every day, but it’s a cool project I can look back on. Plus, now I have a whole new appreciation for those real watchmakers who make these things. They’re like wizards or something. Maybe one day, if I win the lottery, I’ll get a real Patek Philippe. Until then, I’ll keep tinkering and trying to make my own versions.
